| CANDICE HOLDER - LISTD Candice completed her teaching diplomas (AISTD) at the Waterfront Theatre School in 2000 and obtained Advanced 2 level in ballet, modern dance and tap. She then taught dance in London before returning to join the staff of the college in 2002. She obtained her Licentiate in Classical Ballet in 2004 and holds Associate Diploma (ASTD Dip) Level in Modern Dance and Tap ISTD. In 2008 Candice obtained her Licentiate in Modern dance and she also began training with Healthy Living Education in doing her instructors in Clinical Pilates using the Stott method. Candice choreographs extensively, particularly enjoying contemporary and classical dance forms. She is head of the dance department as well as head of Ballet and coaches to Advanced 2 and Associate Levels. She also teaches Modern Dance and Tap to Advanced level. She obtained her Fellowship in 2010 in Classical Ballet. Candice also lectures in Anatomy and Physiology. Her diverse qualifications make her a tremendous asset to the Waterfront Theatre School. |
| JANINE BINNS – AISTD DIPLOMA - Head of Corporate Production and Dance Company Janine graduated in 1995 with Associate and Associate Diplomas in modern dance and tap through the ISTD in London. Upon Graduation, Janine joined various dance companies including, Classic Moves and Impact Entertainment, performing in numerous corporate and cabaret entertainments. Janine then went on to perform in 5 star Hotels in Taiwan. She first joined the staff of the Waterfront Theatre School in 2002 when she was in charge of the Waterfront Theatre Dance Company. Janine then went back to performing professionally and rejoined the staff in 2009. She is currently teaching modern dance, tap and hip-hop. Janine is head of Corporate Theatre and the Waterfront Theatre Dance Company. | JEREMY QUICKFALL - SINGING AND MUSICAL THEATRE (B. Mus Piano and Singing UCT) Jeremy Quickfall graduated with a B.Mus degree in piano and singing from the University of Cape Town in2002. In his final year of study he won the Lionel Bowman Piano Prize for Beethoven Music and placed second in the Bach Piano Competition. While studying, Jeremy worked in various capacities in various stage productions including Jesus Christ Superstar, Carousal, Evita, The Impresario, Annie, Friends and Classics and Naked Boys Singing. After graduating, he worked as a Singers’ Accompanist at U.C.T. and a Primary School teacher. During this time he was a Musical Director for ‘sWonderful, ‘sMarvelous, ‘sGershwin and Carole King: A Tapestry. In 2005 Jeremy resigned from his teaching post when he was cast in A Handful of Keys, with which he toured South Africa and Swaziland for 15 months. Other productions have included Behind the Mask, The Best of Ian and Rory, Vibravo, Divine Divas, Divas and Divos, Tapas, Who Stole the Orchestra and Captain Entertainment. Jeremy does a lot of corporate work. Notable functions have included President De Klerks 70th Birthday Party, the Fleur d u Cap Awards Evening, Die Burger Kerskonsert, CAPAB’s Mozart Anniversary Concert Series and Fine Music Radio’s Birthday Bash. In 2007, Jeremy joined the staff at The Waterfront Theatre College as its Musical Director. He is currently performing in a two hander with Rory Rootenberg entitled Both of Me. Jeremy has performed internationally on The Rhapsody (Starlight Cruises) on a number of occasions. Most recently, he was seen in a pantomime Aladdin as a Twanky (the dame), and regularly performs at the Baxter Theatre in Morning Melodies. |
| DEON BISSCHOFF - AISTD/THEATRE TECHNOLOGY DIPLOMA WITS Deon is one of Keith and Delia's first graduates, gaining his teaching Diploma's in Modern Dance and Tap. In addition, Deon obtained his diploma in Set and Lighting Design, Theatrical Make-Up and Prop and Set Design from Wits University. Deon has appeared in numerous productions over the years, including 'Mystique' and 'West Side Story', 'Follies Panache' in Cape Town, as well as many shows, television performances and corporate theatre nationally and internationally. He choreographs extensively and designs sets and lighting for numerous productions. His work can be seen at the Waterfront Aquarium, where he designed and built a full-scale model of the water table. He has his own cabaret show which he presents on a regular basis, and is framed for his impressions of Tina Turner and Liza Minelli! He has recently returned from Spain, where he performed his show for six months. He has rejoined the staff of the WTS - his 'home base' tutoring in Theatre Technology, drama and musical theatre. | PAUL GRIFFITHS – HEAD OF DRAMA AND MUSICAL THEATRE – TRINITY COLLEGE Paul’s professional career in theatre started as an actor in Musical Theatre Productions including Hair, Jesus Christ Superstar (National Tour), Evita (National Tour), Peter Pan, Camelot, Mame, and Fiddler on the Roof. He is also completed one season at Maynardville in The Taming of the Shrew. After four years of working around South Africa, Paul moved to London where he spent the next 8 years, returning to South Africa in November 2004. Whilst in London, Paul completed an MA with Distinction in Theatre Directing from Middlesex University – a course which included modules at The GITIS Conservatory in Moscow, RESAD Drama School in Madrid and masters classed from The Berliner Ensemble. Following the course of study Paul shifted his career focus from being on stage to directing. It was as a director that Paul continued to develop his career in the UK. His last position in London was as Associate Director of The Bridewell Theatre where he produced a lunchtime season of plays (8 plays in total) to an audience of city workers. This stint at The Bridewell included periods where Paul was Acting Artistic Director. Prior to joining The Bridewell, Paul had been Education Associate for The Orange Tree Theatre in Richmond where he directed the theatre’s Shakespeare-in-School Programme, this programme currently performs to an average of 20 000 people per year. His appointment at The Orange Tree followed a stint as one of the Theatre’s Trainee Directors a coveted position for emerging directors with impressive alumni. In 2003 Paul was invited to join the prestigious Young Director’s Programme at the Royal National Theatre – London. This programme is offered to 12 emerging directors led by directing luminaries including Sir Peter Brook and Sir Peter Hall. Paul’s directing credits abroad include: A Place with the Pigs by Athol Fugard, The Simple Truth, by Michael Gurr, Equal Partners by David Tomlinson, Twelfth Night and The Taming of the Shrew by William Shakespeare, Me and My Friend, by Gillian Plowman and the musicals My Fair Lady, Snoopy and Annie. Upon returning to South Africa, Paul joined the Waterfront Theatre School in Cape Town as a Senior Lecturer. In 2006 he took over as Head of the drama department and has worked consistently to develop their current drama programme. He started his own production company, Bigleaf Productions to provide a platform for a wider range of literary work. The company hopes to stimulate and inspire new writing through introductions to writing from across the globe. For Bigleaf Productions, Paul has directed The Open Couple by Dario Fo (Artscape), The Simple Truth by Michael Gurr (for the Grahamstown Festival), The Last Five Years by Jason Robert Brown (The Intimate Theatre in Cape Town and the Liberty Theatre on the Square in Johannesburg) and Shirley Valentine by Willy Russell. His production The Simple Truth was listed by Cape Town critics as one of the top 5 productions of the 2006 Grahamstown Festival. His production of The Last Five Years was voted number 4 in the list of top 10 productions for 2006 as well as being nominated for a Fleur du Cap People’s Choice Award. Shirley Valentine starring Anthea Thompson was critically acclaimed and 3 sold out runs! In addition to teaching and directing, Paul has also been involved in the Ikwezi Project at the Baxter Theatre, a programme that aims to mentor young directors and actors from the local community. His latest productions are "My Fair Lady" in Port Elizabeth,Ï love you, your perfect now change, “Happy Days” and various productions at On Broaway. . Paul has also been involved in the New Writing Programme run by Roy Sergeant at Artscape and is very excited to be a part of a project to develop new writing in this country. | MARY MARTIN - ADMINISTRATION Mary Martin has probably the greatest knowledge of the college than anyone. Her daughter, Lorna is a graduate, and dancing professionally overseas. Mary handles the finances, class enquiries, parents, crying six year-olds, crying twenty year-olds, absenteeism, supervision of the residences, reminding Keith and Delia ten times a day where they should be, and reminding three hundred students where they shouldn’t be! She handles the bookings for professional jobs and enquiries from the casting agents. In fact, she should be paid five times as much salary! She has been with the company for ever. |
| SAM DE ROMJIN – LTCL SPEECH AND DRAMA Sam came to us from Natal, after studying a diploma in Public Relations at Varsity College, and a year of Drama at the University of Natal. Sam Graduated from the Waterfront Theatre School in 2001, with her Associate Teachers in Drama, and the highest mark for her examination in that year at the college. She has performed in, "It’s not where you Start"," As the Koekie Crumbles" by Fiona Coyne as well as in a number of children’s theatre productions. She then went on to do a film writing course, and the TEFL course and taught English to foreign language students. She then found her feet in the Theatre World by Stage Managing productions for friends, and also professionally at the Grahamstown Arts Festival for a number of years. She then worked for Theatre for Africa for two years as Stage Manager, at the Old Zoo venue, where she worked on the productions, "Into the Lions Den", "Limpopo" and "Mama Thembu’s Wedding". From there, Sam continued Stage-managing smaller productions in and around Cape Town and she has most recently worked on "Shirley Valentine" at the Kalk Bay Kitchen. She has also worked extensively in Stage and Production managing for Mynie Grove, working on corporate events, with big Bands and stage managing backing choirs for Diana Ross, Josh Groban and Michael Bublé. She continues to be part of the team on the Shoprite Checkers "BBB" road show, which travels all over South Africa, judging the choirs and solo artists created by the staff of the Shoprite Checkers. She started teaching at KTO at the Baxter Theatre, teaching the junior drama on Saturday mornings, as well as teaching Arts and Culture at Cedar House School for two years. Her heart lies in the development of young underprivileged kids, and works with a group in Masiphumelela. Sam comes to us after achieving her LT at the college. She is now head of the part-time Drama Department, and achieved a 100% pass rate for her private Trinity College Drama students last year. She is married and a mother of three children, and three dogs and lives in Plumstead. She is now head of the part time examination Trinity College Drama department |
| SHONA BRABANT - AISTD(DIPLOMA) - Head of Junior Ballet Shona joined staff as an associate teacher in 2009. She is head of the junior ballet department and is personal assistant to Candice Holder on the ballet and Delia Sainsbury in coaching the new advanced 2 modern theatre dance syllabus. She specializes in Contemporary choreography, winning the Choreographic award for 2008. Shona is a resident Choreographer for the contemporary genre and for the Dance Company. |
| CHERI-LEE BLACKIE - LTCL DRAMA/MUSICAL THEATRE - Head of Junior Drama Cheri-Lee joined as an staff member in 2009, after graduating with her Licentiate in both Drama and Musical Theatre and winning best Actress for 2008. She now heads the Junior Drama and Musical theatre department. Apart from teaching she has embarked on her professional career as an actress handling educational drama tours, playing in "Rumpelstiltskin" at the Baxter Theatre, and various productions at the Masque and local Cape Town theatres. She was assistant Director on “Blue Jeans”, "Positive Thinking", an educational Aids Play written and Directed by Delia Sainsbury A recent production she wrote and directed is "Happy Ever After", a children’s fantasy for the Waterfront and reproduced at the Masque Theatre. |
| MELISSA ANDREWS (AISTD) Melissa Andrews has obtained her advanced performing diplomas in classical ballet and modern theatre dance through the ISTD London. She joined staff in 2010 as an apprentice teacher. Melissa now teaches across the board both part time and full time students. She is a member of the Waterfront Theatre Dance Company and continues to dance professionally. |
| WILLIAM JONES (AISTD)-Head of Male Dance William Jones obtained his advanced performing diplomas in classical ballet, modern theatre dance, and tap. He qualified through the ISTD with his teachers in classical ballet and in modern theatre dance. He is currently working on his tap associate. William is a leading male dancer in the Waterfront Theatre Company and dances professionally outside of the college. He is in charge of training the male students in dance and restructured the male dance programme to train the male in all dance genres and physical fitness. |
| SIMONE MARSHALL – Head of Junior tap and Junior Modern Simone graduated end of 2009 with her ISTD London Advanced 2, the highest level performance examination, in both Modern and Tap Dance, Performer’s Certificate in Musical Theatre from Trinity College London as well as Honors for her Associate Examination for both Modern and Tap. Simone has also trained in Funk, Jazz, Cabaret, Ballet, Contemporary, various repertoires from Musicals and had extensive drama, television presentation and vocal training. Simone is the Head Organizer and Instructor for the Waterfront Theatre School’s Adult / Evening classes. With the Waterfront Theatre Company, Simone danced and choreographed but also worked behind the scenes in stage management, publicity and production. Simone has choreographed for Bishops Preparatory School’s year end Cabaret and Camps Bay High School’s production of ‘Grease’; she has also choreographed and danced in various corporate events. She was also a Semi-Finalist in the 2008 Top Billing Presenter Search and she attained her HFPA Group Fitness Instructor and Basic Exercise Science qualification. Upon graduating, Simone began her teaching career as Head of Modern and Tap Dance at a dance academy in Cape Town, teaching all ages from pre-scholars to Adults. Simone is ecstatic to be joining the Waterfront family as Staff and is privileged to accept her new position as Dance Instructor and Head of Junior Tap and Junior Jazz. |
| GARTH TAVARES- Assistant Musical Theatre Director Garth has been involved in musical theatre since the age of 6 and completed his BMus degree in 2005 at the University of Port Elizabeth while also playing percussion for the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra. While most artists have a preference for a particular element of the theatre world, Garth finds himself passionate about everything from directing and choreographing to musical direction and performance. While he has achieved success and won numerous awards in all of these spheres, his most proud moments include winning Eastern Cape Herald Showtime awards for Best Director in Junior Theatre (2008-2010), Best Contribution to Theatre Dance (2008-2010), Best Contribution to Theatre Music (2005, 2006 & 2008-2010) and Special Theatrical Achievement (2005 & 2007).Recent work includes directing for the PE Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s “Back to Broadway”, musically directing the same society’s production of “High School Musical” and choreographing “Our House” for Woodridge High School. |
